Just starting out on your music singing career is often difficult. You don’t even know which songs you should start with to get yourself singing. That’s why I’m going to provide you with a decent list of easy songs to learn to sing.
Ready? Let’s Go!
A Note on This List
I have selected songs mainly in the baritone range because that’s essentially where most guys range is. As far as songs for women, the beauty of this list is that these songs are easily sung in an octave higher so they’ll be suitable for girls too.
How to Select an Easy Song
There are a few different elements that go into selecting a good, easy song:
- How high and how low the notes are. This is pretty self-explanatory. You want to be able to hit every single note with ease.
- Does the song have a lot of different timings? What you are looking for is for the lyrics to be pretty consistent. This doesn’t mean that the words have to be slow. It just means that there shouldn’t be a mixture of short notes and long notes. At least, not for beginners.
- Are there jumps in the music? The higher the gaps between the notes, the harder it will be to sing it.
It’s great to have a nice varied repertoire so that you’ll be able to sing a bunch of different songs. But more than this, singing easy songs to begin with gives you something that money can’t buy. Confidence. The more comfortable you are with your songs the better you’ll be able to sing them. And if you can do that, then your singing skill will improve dramatically.
Remember, these songs are just a guide. If you have a song that follows those guidelines then by all means, let me know about it and I’ll add it to the list.
Money Money Money – ABBA
This is a little harder but there are really only two notes in the whole song. The melody is just a few notes and the chorus is higher than this. However, apart from the change between the melody and chorus there are no big jumps so you can actually practice this in two separate parts and then put it together when you are confident.
Love Me Tender – Elvis Presley
This is one of the easiest songs you’ll ever sing. In fact, I remember learning about this song in school. It was used as a recommendation and lesson that music doesn’t need to be complicated for it to be good.
Lovely Day – Bill Withers
I actually remember this from the Tetley teabags advert growing up. It’s stuck with me ever since then. It’s just such an uplifting song as well as being an easy one to sing. Remember, sing this song with a smile and it will be so much better.
Breakfast at Tiffany’s – Deep Blue Something
This is a simple song again as, if you listen carefully, you’ll discover that the melody only comprises a few notes. The same is true for the chorus. It’s just repeated again and again. If you get the hang of it, it’s a really easy song to sing.
Let Her Go – Passenger
This is a really soft and sweet song that particularly suits slightly higher voices. There are very few different notes here and the actual song just continually repeats itself. Something we are always looking for in easy songs is the repetition and simple lyrics. This ones fits the mould perfectly.
Chasing cars – Snow Patrol
If I just lay here… This song is beautiful in its simplicity. Don’t worry about trying to sing the harmony. Just sing the main part. The notes are all about the same length, and are all very similar in pitch. The added bonus of this song is that if you sing it lying down you’ll be breathing better too ?
Imagine – John Lennon
This isn’t one of the easiest ones on this list but easy enough if you leave out that top note. There isn’t really anything to say about this song that hasn’t already been written.
Fly Me to the Moon – Frank Sinatra
This is an oldie but quite a goody. The song is pretty catchy but not necessarily easy. The notes are basic and you shouldn’t have a problem reaching them. However, the difficulty in this song is the rhythm and keeping in time with the music. Give it a go though, you may surprise yourself!
Your Song – Elton John
There is just one semi-difficult part of this song and that is where there is a jump between the notes. The other thing with this song is that the words don’t flow like some of the others in this list. Moreover, keeping the tune isn’t the easiest to do here. However, in terms of vocal range, this definitely deserves its place on the list.
Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door – Bob Dylan
The version I’m referring to here is the one by Bob Dylan and not the version by Guns N’ Roses. The song is so amazing in its simplicity, something that seems to be lost on many of the more current recording artists.
Blowin’ in the Wind – Bob Dylan
How many years have gone by and this is still one of the favorites? There are so many good Bob Dylan songs that are easy to sing you can almost take your pick. However, this one is definitely one of the easiest.
Hurt – Johnny Cash
I’m a big fan of country music and this is one of the first songs I learnt on the guitar. This is on the longer scale of things but it’s an easy song to sing. “You can have my empire of dirt!”
Carnival of Rust – Poets of the Fall
There is something very simple about this song if you just concentrate on the lyrics and fade out the drums. Listen to Marko Saaresto and you will notice that he is actually singing about the same speed the whole time. And not very quickly at that too.
In Closing
This isn’t supposed to be a complete list. There are loads of others that you can add to your playlist. However, it’s important that you don’t try to overextend yourself when you are starting out. Remember, slow and steady wins that race. If you have any comments, let me know below. Till next time!
